  • Unveiling Ceremony of a Mural Designed to
    Raise Carbon Reduction Awareness

In October 2021, the Changwon branch of K-water held an unveiling ceremony at the Bansong Water Purification Plant for a mural that has been created to promote the carbon reduction movement. Occupying three walls(total area: 350㎡) at the entrance to the Bansong Water Purification Plant, the promotional mural expresses the theme of achieving ‘A Happy World Where Water, Nature, and People Live Together’ with a mindset and activities focused on reducing carbon emissions. It was completed with the participation of K-water employees, members of a local environmental organization, and artists specializing in public art. The mural is designed to express how K-water participates and pursues carbon reduction and to raise awareness of carbon neutrality among visitors to the Water Purification Plant. In addition, the Changwon branch is collaborating with an NGO to realize carbon neutrality, providing free training on how to respond to climate change, publicizing K-water’s carbon reduction activities, and introducing a smart water meter (SWM) system that detects water leakages and then takes immediate remedial action during the process of supplying water to ensure low carbon emissions.

  • Establishment of South Korea’s First '2050 Carbon
    Neutrality Roadmap for Water Management

K-water has established South Korea’s first ‘2050 Carbon Neutrality Roadmap’ for water management with the aim of meeting the government's 2030 GHG emissions reduction targets and realizing 2050 Carbon Neutrality. It has selected four main strategies and twelve main execution missions and began to pursue carbon neutrality in earnest. The ‘2050 Carbon Neutrality Roadmap’ for water management serves as the base data for implementing the climate change response carbon neutrality policy of K-water, the organization that is mainly responsible for South Korea’s management of water; includes details on GHG reductions for the entire water management process; and recommends the missions that must be taken to achieve 2050 carbon neutrality. The roadmap lays out the vision of ‘Going beyond Satisfying Carbon Neutrality and Leading the National Effort’ for K-water, and also sets the target of reducing GHG emissions by 7.8million tons in 2050, with the aim of achieving a nine-fold(888%) reduction of K-water’s estimated GHG emissions for 2050. To realize this target, the roadmap offers concrete details about the method and missions that must be adopted to reduce GHG emissions; establishes the 4 main strategies and selects the 12 implementation missions on carbon zero water management, such as expanding water energy, promoting the use of green hydrogen, and creating carbon sinks.

  • The Signing of a Business Agreement with Yeoju City to Enhance the Safety of Drinking Water and Raise the Consumption of Tap Water

On December 10, 2021, K-water and Yeoju City signed a sub-contract agreement on a pilot project to build a smart network management infrastructure and install smart drinking booths. The pilot project will contribute to improving the safety of drinking water supplies and the public’s consumption(drinking) of tap water. The "Smart Water Network Management Infrastructure Construction Project" will build a new smart water management system capable of real-time remote analysis and confirmation by applying the latest information and communication technologies(ICT) to the traditional water supply infrastructure. Under this agreement, K-water will execute the project from January to December 2022, culminating with the installation of automatic water quality measurement devices and precision filtration devices(for managing water quality and responding to emergency events), chlorine injection facilities, and an automatic drainage system that will discharge contaminated water into the water pipe system operated by Yeoju City. K-water will also conduct a pilot project involving the installation of smart drinking booths in Yeoju City Hall for demonstration purposes as well as booths for the general public that will serve as ‘digital water springs in the urban center'.

  • K-water Signs a Business Agreement with the Korea Water Cycle Association for the Construction of a Robust Urban Water Cycling Ecosystem

On December 14, 2021, K-water and the Korea Water Cycle Association entered into an agreement (‘Construction of a Robust Urban Water Cycling System’) aimed at realizing carbon neutrality. The agreement was pursued to search for ways of cooperation based on a consensus on the need to build a sustainable water cycling system for restoring the robustness of water cycling systems that have been compromised by urbanization. The agreement includes provisions on the following: sharing technology/information through debates/seminars with the aim of promoting water cycling; technology development and research on improving water cycling; supporting and publicizing the latest promising technologies for promoting water cycling; and policy-making and widespread publicity to form a public consensus on the need for a robust water cycling system. With this agreement, it is anticipated that K-water and the Korea Water Cycle Association will contribute to overcoming the climate crisis by solving water supply issues in urban settings, realizing sustainable water circulation management, and carbon neutrality.

  • Top Prize at the 2021 Data Quality
    Awards

On December 16, 2021, K-water received the top prize at the 2021 Data Quality Awards organized and hosted by the Ministry of Science & ICT. Now in their 25th year, the Data Quality Awards, regarded are the nation's most prestigious data awards ceremony, are presented to companies and institutions in recognition of their exemplary data quality management activities. By efficiently managing and controlling all data-related processes through its 'Data Management Portal', K-water was judged to display the highest standard of data management in both the private and public sectors and in every aspect of data management from standards and metadata to quality and structure. Since 2016, K-water has efficiently managed and controlled data by establishing and implementing its roadmap for data governance(data integration and standardization, data management system construction, and systemization) at the enterprise-wide level. In March 2021, K-work received the 3rd level certification from the Korea Data Agency. This is the highest-level certification awarded to public organizations under the agency’s Data Management Certification(DQC-M) program.

  • People to Take Up Residence at the Busan Smart Village, a Futuristic Residential Complex

On December 24, 2021, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure & Transport, Busan Metropolitan City, and K-water jointly hosted an event to celebrate new residents moving into the Smart City in Busan Eco-Delta City and to present their smart village operation plans. The Smart Village is a housing complex constructed within the Eco-Delta Smart City, a pilot city planned at the national level. The village has been designed and built as a living lab(a laboratory for conducting research within the confines of living spaces) in which citizens can experience everyday living with advanced technologies. 54households selected in 2020 will move into the village by January 15 and experience living with innovative technologies for 5years while paying only the management fee. Among the forty high-tech technologies installed in the Smart Village, the most interesting one is 'smart water management, which is highly applicable to eco-friendly waterfront cities. This technology is designed to intelligently manage all the steps(water quality, quantity, and control) involved in supplying water from a smart Water Purification Plant(a distributed Water Purification Plant that integrates all of K-water’s advanced technologies) to each household. The Smart City also features unmanned convenience stores, robot cafes, and AI sports centers.
