  • “Use a cup when brushing your teeth”, “Use a tumbler throughout the day instead of single-use cups”, “Check your spending with mobile receipts” These are some of the eco-friendly ideas K-water is trying to share with people to help them take actions in their routine activities to cope with climate change. K-water took it one step further and created the “Bangwoori Green Shelter” in an effort to help achieve carbon neutrality.
The Bangwoori Green Shelter

The kick-off ceremony for the Bangwoori Green Shelter was held on April 26 in Jeongseojin of Gyeongin Arabetgil and attended by K-water CEO Jae-hyeon Park, and Director Yeong-shik Choi from the Seoul regional branch of the Korea Federation for Environmental Movements (KFEM). Chairman Jae-young Huh from the National Water Management Committee, MKYU CEO Mi-kyeong Kim, writer Won-guk Gang, and attorney at law So-young Yang, etc. celebrated the event online with congratulatory video messages, and a tree was planted to commemorate the opening of the shelter.
The fund for the shelter was raised jointly by K-water and the Seoul branch of the Korea Federation for Environmental Movements (KFEM). K-water has run the carbon reduction campaign since last year and raised some funds through it, while K-water employees also chipped in to set up the Love for Water Fund.
K-water ran the Carbon Emissions Reduction Campaign from June through December last year to share eco-friendly ideas and encourage people to put these ideas into practice. K-water donated KRW 10,000 for each person who joined the campaign. A total of 174celebrities from different fields joined the campaign, providing additional momentum for the cause. K-water presented a total of KRW 24million raised through the campaign to the Seoul branch of KFEM for the creation of urban forests.
“Bangwoori benches and “eco-friendly QR code signs” for information on the shelter will be installed at the shelter. The shelter will create a place where citizens can be reminded of their own pledges to reduce carbon emissions by changing routine habits, as well as share eco-friendly ideas and experiences.

Concurrent events

The kick-off ceremony was accompanied by various concurrent events which got people interested in the carbon emission reduction campaign. K-water set up a photo zone where people marked their pledges to reduce carbon emissions. In the photo zone, people could take pictures, holding the campaign sign.
Citizens were also very interested in some of the shelter promotional activities. The “Bangwoori Green Shelter Quiz” and “MBTI-based Carbon Emission Reduction Idea Contest” was conducted on social media prior to the event and ten people were selected as lucky prize winners.
The “Bangwoori Green Shelter Selfie Photo Event will be held continuously, so that the shelter can provide a fun place for citizens to make good on their own pledges to help save the earth.
Members of the Love for Water Group, a social contribution volunteers’ group of K-water are actively involved in volunteer service and donation events to fulfill the company’s social responsibility. Other social contribution activities include the K-water Scholarship Fund to help local students, and the Happy Water Project launched to improve the water use environment for low-income families.
