  • K-water held an emergency meeting to share the drought situations at each dam in order to work on countermeasures to overcome drought. In addition, K-water CEO Park Jae-Hyeon visited the site at Unmun Dam, which experiencing a serious stage of drought, and held brainstorming sessions with employees to prepare drought relief measures.
An emergency meeting was held for responding to drought.

On June 13, 2022, K-water held an emergency meeting for responding to drought at the headquarters water management central operations room and evaluated drought situations of the national dams and countermeasures on water supply.
Supervised by K-water CEO Park Jae-Hyeon, the meeting was attended by employees from the headquarters and the four river basin head offices(at Hanggang, Nakdonggang, Geumgang, Yeongsanggang, & Seomjingang Rivers), and corresponding branch offices of national dams, which require the management of the drought situation, including Soyanggang, Chungju, and Hoengseong Dams, in order to ascertain the drought situation by area and dam, respectively, and discuss the future dam operations and water supply plans.
The average rainfall(based on Jan. 1 to Jun. 12, 2022) in the watershed of 34 dams(20 multipurpose dams & 14 water dams), which are managed by K-water, is 55 percent below normal, with the drought situation getting worse due to the recent prolonged lack of rainfall.
Despite such a situation, K-water has preemptively managed the dams’ water storage by supplying only water on an essential basis, and accordingly, the average water reserve rate of the 34 dams has been maintained at 100 percent for a normal year. However, as three dams – Hoengseong, Boryeong, and Unmun Dams are experiencing the drought stage at the moment, countermeasures tailored to the dam’s situation were established and are currently being put into action, while other dams are also being closely monitored with the plan for drought in preparation.
K-water CEO Park Jae-Hyeon said, “As the amount of rainfall continues to be lower than in previous years, it’s time to act with all our resources and effort to supply water for the general public and industries without problems until when the drought season is over. As cooperation is especially important in dealing with drought, we need to closely cooperate with relevant organizations at the central government and municipality level and exert every effort to operate national dams.”
“As the amount of rainfall continues to be lower than in previous years, we will do our best to supply water for public’s life and industries without problems until when the drought is over.”

K-water CEO Park Jae-Hyeon visited the site of Unmun Dam.

As he believes that each site likely has the answer, CEO Park Jae-Hyeon visited the site of Unmun Dam in Cheongdo-guny, Gyeongsangbuk-do on June 14 and checked the drought situation and water supply plans. The visit to Unmun Dam was followed up with real action after the emergency meeting for responding the drought season held at the headquarters’ water management central operations room on June 13. Once again, CEO Park highlighted the company-wide full efforts to supply water for the general public and industries seamlessly through close cooperation with relevant organizations before the rainy season.
The average rainfall at the Unmun Dam watershed is about 50 percent below normal and since May 25, the dam has been categorized as being in the serious stage of drought.
Therefore, K-water has been supplying water by partly reducing the river maintenance flow to deal with the drought season; however, drinking and industrial water supplies have been normally supplied through adjusting the daily water supply system(80,000 ㎥ per day) in connection with the Munsan and Maegok Purification Plants in Daegu. In addition, agricultural water has been supplied with the necessary amount for farming through austerity operations of the water supply in the area. Furthermore, K-water plans to continuously monitor drought situations and strive to relieve them.
