2023. March VOL. 660
The Juam Dam branch of K-water launched ‘the drought-resistance campaign’ on February 16, 2023 around the Suncheon Station Square to raise awareness of droughts in the Jeonnam region and rally citizens to join the save water campaign. The event was attended by over 50 officials of the Juam Dam branch, Clean Water Management Center of Suncheon City and the Suncheon branch of National Council of Consumer Education.
Since 2022, Jeollanam-do Province has been experiencing droughts attributed to only about 70% of the average annual rainfall. As a result, the water storage rate of Juam Dam stands at around 25%, which is lower than half of the (54%) average. Accordingly, the Juam Dam branch offered tips on how citizens can save water in their everyday life and rallied them to get actively involved.
Juam Dam branch has been taking various actions to cope with droughts at the Juam Dam which has been at ‘serious’ on the drought danger level since August 30, 2022.
To secure enough water for the Juam Dam, a total 121,000 tons of water/per day that is normally required to keep the river flowing for the main and branch dams is being reduced, with 160,000 tons/per day of domestic and industrial water being taken entirely from river water. The water is being supplied to the Juam Dam from water sources other than the Boseong River Dam basin, and up to 6,000 tons/per day of water is also redirected to the dam from the Janheung Dam that supplies water to Mokpo City.
Local governments to which the Juam Dam supplies water are encouraged to save water on a voluntary basis, while water-saving campaigns are being launched to reduce water consumption in local communities.
As cited, “There are many ways to save water in your everyday life. You can wait until enough amount of laundry is collected before washing them, keep the tap water pressure optimal, take less time taking a shower, use a cup when brushing your teeth, and use a large bowl of water instead of running water when washing dishes. Please join us in saving water on a daily basis until the drought ends.”
As cited, “We’re enduring a serious drought in the Jeonnam area. The city of Suncheon is promoting a campaign to overcome the drought with the goal of using 20% less water per person. City officials and citizens are involved in a street campaign to raise public awareness of drought and encourage people to save water.”
As cited, “Water shortage is serious. One-time campaigns are not enough, so we need to make it a habit to save water in our everyday life. And everybody should join it, including myself.”
As cited, “By realizing how serious the drought is as I got involved in this campaign, I also decided to save water too. I’ll always make sure to use a bowl of water instead of keeping the tap water running when I wash dishes.”
