Solutions to climate crisis facing the Middle East

K-water participated in Citiscape Global 2024, the largest urban and real estate development expo in Saudi Arabia, from November 11 to 14. Recently, Saudi Arabia has experienced extremely heavy rains exceeding the annual average due to the quickly worsening climate crisis, causing death tolls and facility damages on several occasions. In response, the government has been concentrating its efforts on revolutionizing the country’s flood management system. As a water management partner of Saudi Arabia, K-water has embarked on a five-year project together with Team Naver to build a water management digital twin platform, currently implementing it in Jeddah. This is K-water’s second large-scale development project in the country after the first contract on the national housing construction project.

K-water, LX and Team Naver worked together as Team Korea at the expo to showcase the performance and features of the digital water management digital twin platform.
They reported the progress of the project based on the site survey, showed the city of Jeddah in a 3D virtual space, and introduced new ways of discharging water from dams and linking sluiceways to prevent urban flooding. Following the presentation, the Team Korea booth was visited by officials from other Middle East countries experiencing water problems. K-water and the National Housing Company of Saudi Arabia signed an MOU on exchanges of digital twin technology and service knowledge on November 12. Under the MOU, K-water plans to perform real-time analysis of information on dams and rainfalls in Saudi Arabia and implement scenarios of flooding and discharge to respond to heavy rainfalls effectively. Taking full advantage of its water management experiences and cutting-edge water management technology, K-water is emerging as the water troubleshooter in Saudi Arabia. Furthermore, it is also planning to build the foundation for economic cooperation in other countries in the Middle East while actively involved in addressing water challenges in the region.
