Water Becomes a Universal Issue
Water has a profound effect on our lives and all aspects of society. But we easily become oblivious to how crucial water is to us because it is so commonly available. According to a UN report, as many as 2.2 billion people worldwide are water-stressed due to lack of proper water services. Moreover, water has emerged recently as a keyword in climate change, and it is becoming increasingly important. The UN celebrates World Water Day on March 22 every year in order to raise awareness of water as an indispensable, valuable resource as well as to prevent water shortages and water pollution.
First designated in 1992, World Water Day is celebrated around the world to get more people involved in responding to the global water crisis by selecting a theme for the year to focus on. This year, the keyword is “Glacier Preservation.” Storing 70% of the world’s fresh water, glaciers have a direct impact on the ecosystem as well as drinking water supply, agriculture, industry, and clean energy production. Due to global warming, however, glaciers are melting at a rapid rate. The UN has declared the International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation 2025 and adopted the slogan in order to strengthen global cooperation for glacier preservation.
