  • Long-accumulated overseas business experiences and competence
K- water management, the driving force for global market development

The global water market is growing quickly as countries are moving fast to build infrastructure for climate change response. According to Global Water Intelligence, a UK-based provider of water market research information, world water disasters are forecast to cause KRW 2,400 trillion in damage over the next 10 years, with the market for securing stable water supply to emerge as one of the largest investment destinations.
K-water is actively involved in a wide range of overseas businesses including official development assistance (ODA) and overseas investment projects, sharpening its competitive edge in the global water market. Since the first ODA project of conducting a survey on the Fenghua River basin in China in 1993, K-water has been involved in 18 projects worth KRW 107.3 billion in all as of 2024 to help developing countries resolve their water problems. In addition, K-water is currently working on 4 hydraulic power generation projects and 2 water supply projects in a total of 5 countries including the hydraulic power generation project in Patrind, Pakistan as the first overseas investment project that K-water embarked on in 2012. The overseas investment projects have generated combined sales of approximately KRW 1 trillion and enabled K-water to serve as an anchor in pioneering overseas markets not only for itself but also for other Korean water companies and to play an active role in promoting the government policy of expanding green industry exports.

With its superior global cooperation network,
K-water leads the global expansion of domestic water companies

  • Capitalizing on the ever-growing global network it has built through overseas projects over the years, K-water is taking the lead in addressing global water issues and facilitating the overseas expansion of the Korean water industry. As Asia’s No. 1 cross-border water industry cooperation platform launched in 2016, Asia Water Council (AWC) currently has 168 member organizations from 25 countries under the leadership of K-water and the Korean government. AWC was approved as a special certification body by the United Nations in August 2022. With the inauguration of K-water president Yun Seog-dae as chairperson in July 2023, AWC has gained fresh momentum to grow as a platform for cooperation and solidarity to cope with global water issues beyond Asia.
As the chair organization of AWC, K-water opened a special session at the 3rd Asia International Water Week (AIWW) held in September 2024, where it presented innovative technology to cope with climate change and accelerate digital transformation in water management. In addition, President Yun met with the minister of Water Resources of China, head of the General Directorate of Water Resources of Saudi Arabia, vice chairperson of the American Waterworks Association, and other senior officials of water-related organizations to discuss the global expansion of the Korean water industry and specific ways of cooperation in the areas of water, energy, and urban development.
The Korea-Mekong Center established by K-water in January 2020 has been leading the cooperation for the sustainable management of water resources among Korea and five countries in the Mekong River region: Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam. In particular, the Korea-Mekong International Water Forum—a diplomatic platform for development cooperation led by K-water—has been a key instrument in not only promoting cooperation with these five countries but also expanding partnerships with major partner countries in the Indo-Pacific region including the US. Furthermore, it is developing government policy projects in the Mekong River region based on the cooperation platform, ODA projects, and other development cooperation projects with MDB and other international organizations, some of which lead to follow-up projects. Through these international projects, K-water is actively involved in helping domestic water companies tap into overseas markets.
Building on these achievements, K-water was designated in 2022 as an International Environmental Cooperation Center dedicated to implementing water-related green ODA projects and as the sole agency responsible for international greenhouse gas reduction projects. Assuming these roles, K-water has been carrying out international cooperation initiatives including environment- and climate-related ODA projects and building bridgeheads for Korea’s green industry exports.

Korea’s super-gap water management technology
in high demand around the world

K-water’s unrivaled global network has significantly raised the company's global profile, which has led to leaders of countries around the world approaching K-water with proposals for cooperation projects. The innovative water management technology of K-water unveiled at the World Water Forum in May has come into the spotlight as a solution to global water issues including floods, droughts, and abnormal water quality amid the growing uncertainty caused by the climate crisis. The three super-gap water management technologies—Digital GARAM+, AI-operated water purification plants, and Smart Water Network Management (SWNM)—are digital innovative technologies that help make optimal decisions with technical data-based forecasts. Using these super-gap technologies, K-water is working closely with countries in Asia on various cooperation projects including the Digital Twin Platform Project in Saudi Arabia, the Karian Metropolitan Water Supply Project in Indonesia, and the Smart Water Management System Project in Cambodia.
A giant green market for climate change and water solutions is opening up ahead, and the competition to preoccupy the global climate tech market among countries is intensifying. K-water is planning to leverage its clout in the global water industry as much as possible to develop cross-border cooperation projects based on the super-gap technologies, contribute to solving water problems facing mankind, and increase opportunities for the Korean water industry to lead the green market.
