A technology that enhances Korea’s leadership in the global semiconductor industry
K-water and SK Hynix signed on October 11 the framework agreement on “the operation and management of SK Hynix’s water supply facilities and combined water supply” as part of efforts to secure for Korea independent ownership of its own ultra-pure water technology and foster its water industry. The agreement is aimed at strengthening the global competitiveness of the domestic semiconductor industry by ensuring stable supply of industrial water including ultra-pure water for Hynix, a global leader in cutting-edge semiconductor technology.
As purified water with nearly zero impurities, “ultra-pure water” is an essential cleaning agent used to wash away byproducts and contaminants that occur in semiconductor processing. Unfortunately, however, Korea has depended on technology owned by other countries for the supply of ultra-pure water. K-water embarked on the development of ultra-pure water technology in 2011 to bridge the technology gap with other countries possessing the technology.
Under the agreement, K-water will develop a combined water supply system including the full cycle of raw water, purified water, and ultra-pure water and cooperate with the private sector to support technological independence and commercialization of ultra-pure water technology by implementing national R&D projects and building and operating a platform center. Ultimately, all these endeavors under the agreement are expected to increase the use of domestic technology in the production of ultra-pure technology, and create an ecosystem of ultra-pure water use with a “technology development, facility operation, technological accumulation, and market expansion” cycle. “K-water will continue to do its best to secure stable water supply for continued technology development and semiconductor production so that water-based original technology stays at the forefront of the global water market," President Yun Seog-dae said.
