A Treasure Map
Gyeongju
Reinterpreted as a Hip City
If you know Gyeongju only as “a thousand-year-old city” or “the mecca of school field trips,” you have yet to discover what the city has to offer. Time is still ticking slowly in the old city but people are having their fair share of fun and exhilarating experiences in the city. Now, let’s go to places where you can discover the old city’s new attractions.

Art museum where nature and a man-made space blend together into a landscape.
When you get to Gyeongju Expo Park, you will see Gyeongju Tower with a cut-out in the center resembling the legendary Nine Story Wooden Pagoda of Hwangryongsa Temple. Then, you must take time and check out what is behind the tower, where you will spot a striking scene. If you simply take a look at the front of the tower and leave the park, you have no idea what you have missed.
Nestled on a walking trail at the back of Gyeongju Expo Park, Gyeongju Solgeo Art Museum blurs the boundaries between nature and a man-made space. The natural environment surrounding the main building of the museum is a work of art in itself. The low-lying building has been carefully designed so as to not stand out but instead blend nicely with the surrounding natural setting. The tour route in each exhibition hall flows as naturally as water runs. The adequate amount of natural lighting coming into each individual space makes you feel as if you are out in the open air.
The most famous artwork of Gyeongju Solgeo Art Museum is on display in Exhibition Hall 3. The title of the artwork is “A Landscape You & the Window Make." You may wonder how a big window alone can be an artwork. When you stand in front of the window against the landscape beyond the window in the background, it finally completes the work of art. Summer paints landscapes in dark green, and autumn, in various colors of foliage. On a rainy day, it creates an ink and wash painting. Since the picture in the frame of the window goes through subtle changes with time, I strongly recommend staying by the window as long as you can and appreciating the landscape painted by Gyeongju as much as you can. -

A Playground for Thrill Seekers
If you are looking for a place for a speedy experience in Gyeongju, visit Gyeongju World full of screams and shouts of people enjoying the thrill of speedy rides. In the old days, Gyeongju World was a popular destination for school field trips; today, it has emerged as a major attraction among thrill seekers who come from all over the country to enjoy extremely thrilling rides. Some of the rides at Gyeongju World are known for being the most exciting and extreme in the country.
Designed with no bottom, Valkyrie drops down from 70m above ground at maximum speed of 120km per hour. It makes you feel as if you were floating in the air. If you want to try a more challenging ride, try Draken, which falls vertically from 63m above ground. If you are a true thrill seeker, you will likely look for something even more thrilling. Krake is a mega-thrill ride that turns 360 degrees as it runs. After blowing your stress away with the exciting rides, it is now time to take a break as you take photos at the photo zones set up across the theme park or watch performances taking place on outdoor stages, which will take you back to a fairytale world and recall your childhood memories. In addition, there are special seasonal events held across the park, with the Halloween festival currently taking place in autumn. This fall, how about making special memories with your loved ones at Gyeongju World? -

A Way to Remember Gyeongju
The store sign is just three tombs with no words. Stepping into the store, you will find a phrase hanging on one of the walls: “We all have a brush with Gyeongju once at some point in our life.” I think it is true. In school, we all learn about Gyeongju as a historic city and it is one of the most popular destinations of school field trips. If you need a souvenir to remember Gyeongju by or to give others as a present, Baeri Samneung Park is a must-visit place. Located in Hwanglidan-gil, the store featuring Gyeongju goods offers a wide variety of souvenirs and gift items to choose from.
Initially, it was a workshop where store owner Hyeon-jung Lee made candles. Since she needed a sales channel for her candles, she decided to transform the workshop into a goods shop. That is how Baeri Samneung Park started. At first, she thought it would be a good idea to make Cheomseongdae-shaped candles. She made mini candles reduced in the exact proportion to the actual dimensions of Cheomseongdae, which later became the store’s signature goods. Now, the product lineup has been expanded to Seokuram-shaped badges, postcards, and key rings featuring landscapes of Gyeongju, and other items whose designs are created by local artists. Other items are designed to highlight the historical and cultural heritage of Gyeongju, including hair bands designed to resemble the gold crown of Silla and “Aerin Wangja,” an experimental version of the Litte Prince translated in the local dialect of Gyeongsang-do. -
