  • 01 K-water helps forest fire-affected communities return to normalcy

In the wake of the massive forest fire that has swept large parts of the North Gyeonsang Province, K-water is concentrating its efforts on helping fire victims return to normalcy. K-water discharged Seongdeok Dam and Andong Dam for the first time on March 25 for disaster response purposes to supply fire-extinguishing water. It also donated over 90,000 bottles of tap water to local communities affected by the fire soon after it broke out.
K-water took follow-up actions on April 2 to support residents of fire-struck regions, such as supplying dam water and offering reductions or exemptions on water bills. These benefits are applicable to Andong City, Cheongsong-gun, Hadong-gun, and Uljoo-gun, as well as businesses operating in these four regions. In addition, it donated daily necessities and medical supplies for displaced local residents, carried out emergency waterworks recovery operations in the fire-struck areas, and ran the K-Healthcare Bus for medical checkup and counseling. Furthermore, K-water will proactively respond to the potential deterioration of water quality due to the possibility of algal blooms caused by polluted soil or ashes from the fire.

  • 02 K-water and Naver Agree to Collaborate on Projects Using Water Management Digital Twin

K-water and Naver Corp. signed on April 3 an MOU for “collaboration to respond to mandatory ESG climate disclosure.” Under the MOU, the two organizations will create a water disaster risk evaluation model based on scenarios of future climate change and provide a scientific evaluation framework to allow corporations to respond effectively to climate risks and disclosure requirements.
Existing risk evaluation models used by major listed companies depend heavily on foreign institutions, or they are based mainly on past statistics; hence the difficulty in incorporating scenarios of future climate change. To address the problems, K-water will combine its digital twin technology and Naver’s 3D spatial data to analyze systematically the risk levels faced by individual business sites in connection with floods and urban inundation, and visualize outcomes of the water disaster risk evaluation.
The evaluation outcomes will be ready for use within this year, with the evaluation items to be expanded to include more climate risk factors such as drought and rising sea level.
