The arboreum offers a great view of the West Sea as seen through Korean Black Pines that stay green all four seasons. At Cheollipo Arboretum, your eyes get the double pleasure of seeing plants and the refreshing sea at the same time as you walk around.
As soon as you step into the arboretum, you will be greeted by the scents and sights of flowers and trees. Byeong-gal Min(Carl Ferris Miller), the founder of the arboretum who was born in Pennsylvania, USA but moved to Korea, spent 40 years growing the forest in Taean. He was dedicated to taking care of the arboretum until the last day of his life. His 40 years of dedication turned what was a vast empty field into an arboretum with the widest variety of plant species in the country. The flowers and trees in the arboretum are vibrant and vivid in colors. Perhaps, it is Min’s love for nature that keeps them so fresh and lively.
Walking around the 65,623㎡ Miller Garden, you will likely need to take some rest at the shelters set up across the garden. Among the shelters, the view of the sunset you watch at Noeul Shelter where artworks are on display is simply breathtaking. The hiking trail is divided into nine sections, each of which offers a uniquely entertaining package of things to see. Curious children have their curiosity satisfied by watching new and exotic plants rarely found elsewhere, followed by adults who take their time to enjoy a mind-soothing walk. The trail continues to entertain both kids and adults with flowers and plants from beginning to end, making the long walk so much fun.
Cheollipo Arboretum also runs the Garden Stay. It is not merely an accommodation facility as it offers a unique opportunity to feel nature with all of your five senses. The Garden Stay includes educational and forest docent-led programs designed to help people gain better understanding of plants and nature as they walk around the garden and observe plants and trees and meditate, ultimately having the experience of becoming one with nature. Of the four seasons, spring is the perfect time for a visit to Cheollipo Arboretum and the Garden Stay as plants are in their best costume. If you travel in Taean, the arboretum should be part of your itinerary.
