A Time to Reflect on Respect for Those Who Defended the Nation

On May 17, ahead of the Month of Patriotism and Veterans, a labor-management joint social contribution activity involving families took place. On this day, employees of K-water and their families gave up their weekend to volunteer in maintaining the graves at the National Daejeon Cemetery.
Before starting the activities, the participants stood side by side in front of the Memorial Tower to honor the patriots and war heroes who were buried there. Even the children who had been curiously exploring the cemetery naturally became solemn as they put their hands together in front of the imposing tower. Following the incense offering by Vice President Hyoung-ju Ryu of K-water and Chairman Ki-chan Park of the Labor Union, the participating families observed a moment of silence to pay tribute to those who devoted their lives for the country.
Before beginning the main volunteer work, the participants received a brief instruction on how to place the Taegeukgi (Korean national flag) before moving to the designated gravesites. The adults drilled holes on the left side of the headstones to insert the flagpoles, with the children taking charge of placing the flags neatly. After setting the flags upright, they removed surrounding weeds and wilted flowers by hand, and some offered short silent prayers in front of the graves. Each expressed gratitude and respect in his or her own way to those who sacrificed their lives for the nation.
This activity served as an educational opportunity for children to reflect on loyalty and patriotism, and a precious moment for adults to remember the sacrifices made for the country.

We participated in the volunteer activity as part of educating our child, but today’s experience was more meaningful to us than just simple “volunteering.” Honestly, I had only seen memorial ceremonies at the National Cemetery through media, but having the opportunity to visit in person inspired feelings of solemnity and deepened my gratitude toward the patriots who sacrificed for our country.

A few days ago, my daughter watched the movie A Resistance at school, and she has since taken a strong interest in history. Recently, we visited Seodaemun Prison as a field trip, and we’re planning to visit Dokdo for our upcoming vacation. Through today’s volunteer work, I hope the children can reflect on and appreciate the sacrifices made by those who dedicated themselves to the nation.
