  • 01. Asia Water Council Accredited by UNEP

The Asia Water Council (AWC)—the largest water cooperation organization in Asia—has been officially accredited by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Established in 2016 by Korea’s Ministry of Environment and K-water, AWC focuses on investments and projects to promote sustainable water security by helping Asian countries lacking climate adaptability build climate-resilient water management systems and safe water supply and sewerage infrastructure so as to cope with floods and droughts.

This accreditation acknowledges AWC’s efforts toward enhancing water security by analyzing climate vulnerability and supporting the construction of disaster risk management infrastructure in developing countries, and allows AWC to participate officially in UN environmental forums such as the United Nations Environment Assembly, present its opinions in the decision-making process including setting agenda and approving strategies and budgets, and collaborate on a broader range of joint projects with UNEP.

  • 02. K-water Enters Vietnam’s Water Market by Acquiring a Stake in Waterworks Operation

K-water signed a share purchase agreement with RBC Water of Malaysia and Phu My Vinh—a water utility company in Long An Province, Vietnam—on April 28. This marks the first official entry by K-water into the Vietnamese water supply market since it began pursuing overseas projects as the nation’s leading water management agency.

As a strategic economic location, Vietnam is experiencing rapid industrialization and urban growth; hence the rising water demand. In addition, the country’s privatization of the water supply sector is accelerating, attracting increasing foreign investments. At this juncture, K-water plans to use this stake acquisition as an opportunity to make a strategic entry into the Vietnamese water market, identify new water projects, and expand technology exports. In particular, K-water will implement cutting-edge technologies such as Smart Water Network Management (SWNM) on a trial basis and use it to promote local marketing campaigns in Vietnam and regional expansion through exports to neighboring countries. The company also aims to support the export efforts of domestic water-related companies.

A real-time three-way broadcast system connected the headquarters, regional offices, and on-site teams to simulate a real emergency.
