A Fascinating Encounter with Freshwater Creatures

With the bright golden sculpture of a ssogari (Korean perch) greeting visitors, Danuri Aquarium stands as one of Danyang’s iconic landmarks. As the largest freshwater aquarium in Korea, it is home to over 23,000 fish from 234 different species both native and exotic, all peacefully swimming in beautifully designed tanks and large-scale displays. Walking through the aquarium, you will find it surprisingly fun to examine closely the adorable little faces of these guys from every angle. As you stroll through this three-story facility with two basement levels and one ground floor, you will discover clever and creative photo spots set up across the building. Sculptures shaped like the open mouths of giant fish and bubble windows peeking into the tanks make for perfect backdrops to capture fun and memorable moments in photos.

Every Saturday at 3 PM, visitors can witness the fascinating feeding show at the main tank on the second basement level. A staff diver enters the water to feed fish like sturgeons, offering a rare, captivating spectacle. Though it looks thrilling and also dangerous, the event is conducted safely under strict guidelines, so there's no need to worry. All visitors become quiet during the show as they enjoy the unique experience!

While Danuri is a freshwater aquarium, it’s not all about fish! You’ll also meet amphibians, reptiles, squirrels, and otters. Otters are most popular among these animals. With their sleek bodies and soft, moist paws, otters steal the spotlight and the hearts of visitors. Operated by the Danyang County Office, Danuri Aquarium offers this extraordinary ecological experience for just 10,000 KRW for adults. It's an affordable way to learn about the wonders of freshwater ecosystems while having a fun day out.

A Foodie’s Paradise

With history dating back to 1770 as mentioned in the Dongguk Munheon Bigo, Danyang Jungang Market is a time-honored traditional market. In 1985, the market was relocated to its current site due to the construction of Chungju Dam. Later, it was selected as part of a government cultural tourism market initiative and rebranded from "Danyang Traditional Market" to “Danyang Gugyeong Market,” with the new name reflecting its status as the "9th scenic spot" added to the famous Danyang Palgyeong (Eight Scenic Views of Danyang). Thanks to this new identity and revitalization, it has become a must-visit destination for those exploring Danyang.

What really draws visitors to the market from all over Korea is the incredible variety of local foods. Danyang’s unique geography characterized by sharp temperature swings and alkaline soil is perfect for growing garlic, a staple ingredient in Korean cuisine. This has made garlic the star of the market’s food scene. Signature dishes include garlic fried chicken with whole cloves of garlic deep-fried with chicken and tossed in savory sauces, and garlic tteok-galbi (grilled short rib patties) with locally grown garlic added to ensure that the meaty odor is removed. Just one bite fills your mouth with juicy meat and savory flavors. Yukjjok Garlic Bread, a soft bun slathered in garlic butter, is a beloved treat across generations and a must-try for any bread lover on a "bakery pilgrimage.”

As a culture-tourism market, Danyang Gugyeong Market has evolved beyond mere buying and selling. The market is now a vibrant space where local art and community culture come together. Live music, street performances, and local art displays take place throughout the market. All these cultural elements add to the market’s unique charm and create an atmosphere that is festive and welcoming, leading to revisits. Children delight in tasting new foods amid the lively market scenes, with adults enjoying the nostalgic charm and warmth of a traditional Korean market.

A Blissful Retreat in Nature

As a true hidden gem of Danyang County, Chungcheongbuk-do, Dodamsambong Peaks is a scenic spot that is so beautiful like a painting coming to life. This tranquil site is closely associated with Do-jeon Jeong, a key figure in the founding of the Joseon Dynasty who spent his childhood here. His pen name Three Peaks was inspired by this beloved location. Dodamsambong is famous for its unique, fascinating view created by the three peaks rising dramatically from Namhangang River. The tallest central peak is flanked by two smaller ones, forming perfect natural harmony. The crystal-clear river water that flows between them makes the scenery even more alluring. In particular, the Sambong Story Hall located in the recreation area showcases various exhibits about the attractions and history of Danyang, offering a comprehensive overview of the region at a glance.

No trip to Dodamsambong is complete without a river cruise. Gliding gently along Namhangang River, you’ll truly understand the meaning of “a carefree, leisurely life.” The cruise route departs from Dodamsambong and takes you past other scenic highlights including Seokmun (2nd Scenic View), Eunjuam Rock, Jara Rock, Sambong Bridge, Geumgul (Golden Cave), and Gosu Bridge. Feel the cool river breeze as you enjoy panoramic views of the majestic beauty of Dodamsambong Peaks and the broader landscape from different angles. It will be remembered as an experience that will surely stay with you long after your visit.

Just nearby is the charming Dodam Garden with a photo zone where you can take photos with Dodamsambong in the background. The photo zone is so popular that people often line up for a chance to snap a picture. The neatly framed view of Dodamsambong and the people within the square frame feel soothing and healing just by looking at it. As you stroll through the garden, you might also meet Bangwoori—K-water’s mascot—and Marongyi as the official mascot of Danyang. Don’t forget to grab a fun photo with them!
